Who is the webmaster at Sci-fi Themes.com? This site is designed and maintained by just one person; J. Wagner - I also go by Wags0719 - I have been creating desktop themes and other downloads for many years now. This site primarily features my favorite classic Sci-Fi TV series and various movies. My goal for this site is to create downloads for all of my favorite Sci-Fi TV shows even if it takes me twenty years to do it ! :) There are lots of people out there still interested in shows that were on decades ago such as Lost in Space, Space 1999 & Battlestar Galactica. I hope that people will still have an interest in the television shows & movies featured on this site decades from now as well. How often is this site updated? I have a very hectic schedule, so I am not able to update this site on a regular basis. I try to update the site every one to two months. How do I install a theme? All of the themes on this site are for Windows systems that have "Microsoft Plus". If you do not have "Microsoft Plus", there are programs that will let you install themes without it. "Desktop Themes" by Leftside Software is a free theme installer that allows you to install themes without "Microsoft Plus". It will install everything; wallpaper, icons, cursors, sounds & screensaver. If you register you can also use this program to create your own themes. Desktop Themes v1.89 will work on Windows XP - Click Here to go to the Leftside Software website or directly download the program (146 kb) by Clicking Here Note: All desktop themes, wallpaper & screensavers offered on this site are designed for Windows 98/XP (classic mode for desktop themes), 1024x768, 32 bit color. Size 800 x 600 wallpaper is available separately. All downloadable files are provided in a .zip format - so you will need a zip utility such as Winzip or ZipMagic to extract the program folder from the .zip file. Desktop themes on this site can be installed on Windows XP without classic mode, however, the theme color schemes will not work. If you would rather use Windows XP in the XP style (not classic mode) I recommend finding a "Visual Style" to match the desktop theme you wish to install. You will need XP Visual Styles software to install XP Visual Styles. Two of the most popular programs are Windowblinds by Stardock and StyleXP by TGTsoft The WinCustomize Site offers many downloads (including visual styles) for Stardock Software products. The ThemeXP Site offers many downloads (including visual styles) for TGTsoft Software products. How do I install a screensaver? Windows '98 After unzipping the zip file, copy the screensaver file (.scr) into the C:\windows\system.... directory. Make sure you are in the correct directory. If there are other screensavers located there, then you are in the right one. Windows XP After unzipping the zip file, copy the screensaver file (.scr) into the C:\windows\system32.... directory. Again, make sure you are in the correct directory. If there are other screensavers located there, then you are in the right one. Note: All desktop themes, wallpaper & screensavers offered on this site are designed for Windows 98/XP (classic mode for desktop themes), 1024x768/800x600, 32 bit color. How do I use your OE stationery? All of the OE Stationery on this site is in .eml format (in a zip file) First unzip the file and save the .eml in a folder of your choosing. If you are not familiar with .eml files they are actually very simple to use. Simply double click the .eml file and Outlook will open a "New Message" then Click on the "Forward" button. Remove the automated "forward" text at the top. Hilight the entire "your text here" and replace it with your message. When you have finished reviewing your message, click the send button. The images in the download are too bright/dark - Can this be corrected? Unfortunately, monitor settings vary greatly making images look completely different depending on what kind of monitor you have. The images can look too bright, too dark, washed out, etc. There is no way to create downloads that will look the same on every monitor. I hope that the downloads on this site look acceptable on most monitors. The sound is not working on the theme/screensaver? All of the themes & screensavers on this site have MPEG Layer-3 and/or Radio Quality sound files (.wavs) You may need the MPEG layer-3 codec for the sound to work correctly. Please Note: I am now using Radio Quality wavs in desktop themes and screensavers instead of MPEG Layer-3 condensed wavs. File sizes are larger but the sound quality is greatly improved. How do I create my own desktop theme? Choosing software that you feel comfortable with is, in my opinion, most important when it comes to creating a desktop theme or screensaver. I use quite a few different programs to create desktop themes, screensavers and to maintain this website. Below are some of the software programs I use to make desktop themes and screensavers:
Below are various software programs that I highly recommend:
Can I use your files on my website? - (Terms of Use) Nearly all of the files on this site were created by me and they are free for your personal use. You may include any of these files in an online collection as long as the files are offered as "freeware" and proper credit is given. The files must be copied and uploaded to your own server. A link back to this site would also be greatly appreciated. A note regarding giving credit, copyright and fair use: When it comes to offering an appropriate credit, it is best to read the "terms of use" of every site that you visit (If you plan on using anything from sites you have visited on your own website) Most sites offer a "terms of use" page and every site has different terms. In most cases a link back to the site is requested. Please visit the "Give Credit Where Credit is Due" site for detailed information on this subject. Please Note: Some of the downloads offered on this site were created using components/graphics for which I can not take credit. These components include animated gifs, PSP tubes and artwork such as the fantasy art of Josephine Wall. I have included credit and a link to the website of the original creator of these items whenever possible. Many graphic designers are now offering their files as shareware instead of freeware - Will this site start offering shareware instead of freeware as well? I believe in the internet as a free resource and do not intend on ever charging for any of the downloads available at this site. I have noticed that many sites are requesting "PayPal" donations, however, I do not feel comfortable with this practice. This site is just a hobby and is completely non-profit. Many sites are creating a "members" area in which you must register in order to access their files. Will this site create a members area in the future? I have no intention of creating a members area or requiring visitors to register in order to download the free files on this site. Do the downloads on this site contain any spyware, adware or any other software wrapped with the files? All of the downloads on this site DO NOT contain any kind of spyware, adware or other software wrapped within them. Can I use your site graphics on my website? I do not object to a site using a few graphics from my site. (Do not copy the entire site or portions of it) However, you must copy the graphics & upload them to your own server - Please do not use my bandwidth. Can I submit my theme, screensaver, etc. to be posted on your site? All of the downloads on this site are original creations. This site is just my hobby and was not created to be a large theme site. |
